Laminated Acrylic Sheets — What They Are & How to Use Them

Laminated acrylic sheets are made by fusing multiple layers of material together — typically a printed film, coloured layer or reflective coating sandwiched between sheets of clear acrylic. This layered construction creates visual effects that aren't possible with solid cast acrylic: iridescent colour shifts, mirror finishes, realistic stone and marble patterns, and wood-grain reproductions.

Types of laminated acrylic

We carry several distinct types of laminated acrylic, each with different construction methods and visual effects:

Iridescent: Clear acrylic with a colour-shifting iridescent film bonded to both sides. The colour changes depending on the angle of viewing — similar to the effect you see on a soap bubble or oil on water. Available in standard 3mm thickness. Popular for jewellery, decorative panels and art installations.

Mirror: Clear acrylic with a reflective metallic backing in various colours — gold, silver, blue, red and more. These are lighter, safer and easier to machine than glass mirrors, making them ideal for signage, displays, costume design and architectural features. The mirror coating is on one side only, so the reverse shows the backing colour.

Stone effect: A printed paper design with a realistic marble or stone pattern, laminated between two sheets of clear acrylic. The result is a convincing stone look that's lightweight, easy to cut and particularly striking when backlit — the light passes through the printed pattern for a warm, translucent glow. Available in single-sided (pattern visible from one side) and double-sided versions where both faces show the design, which is important for jewellery and other objects seen from both sides.

Wood effect: High-resolution scans of real wood grain printed onto clear acrylic with a solid colour backing. These give a natural wood appearance in a material that's waterproof, consistent in colour and easy to laser cut.

Working with laminated acrylics

Laminated acrylics can be worked with the same tools as standard cast acrylic — they cut cleanly on a laser cutter, can be machined on a CNC or milled by hand, and polish well with fine abrasives and polishing compounds. A few things to keep in mind:

Laser cutting: Most laminated acrylics laser cut cleanly, but check the product notes — some types with metallic or reflective layers may not be suitable for laser processing. The stone and wood effect sheets cut well because the printed layer is paper-based.

Edge finishing: When you cut through a laminated sheet, the layers become visible at the edges. For some applications (like jewellery) this layered edge can be an attractive feature. If you want a seamless look, you can polish or flame-polish the edges, or apply edge banding.

Bending: Laminated acrylics can be heat-formed using a strip heater or heat gun, but take care — excessive heat may damage printed or reflective layers. Test on a scrap piece first.

Common applications

Laminated acrylics are popular across a wide range of making and design disciplines. Jewellery designers use them for pendants, earrings and bracelets where the layered patterns create eye-catching pieces. Signmakers and display designers use mirror and iridescent laminates for retail displays and architectural features. Guitar pickguard makers use laminated acrylics for custom pickguards with unique finishes. Model makers, furniture designers and artists use stone and wood laminates as lightweight alternatives to the real thing.

All of our laminated acrylic sheets are stocked in standard 3mm thickness, with sheet sizes from 300x200mm up to 1800x1000mm depending on the type. Sample sizes are available if you want to check the colour and finish before committing to a full sheet.
